Video Game Reviews of Prince of Persia

Customer Review: Prince of Persia sets a bad precedent for DLC and future Ubisoft titles
Summary: 1 Stars

Recently there have many cases of downloadable content being exclusive to one platform. It happened to Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3, two high profile titles. However, the DLC that is coming February 26th for Prince of Persia is fundamentally different.

First, this DLC will continue the main story of the game and give it a new, different ending. Compare this to most DLC, where what is added are new side quests/missions, weapons, armors, bonus modes and maps. It's easy to feel like you've been sold an incomplete game for the sake of charging you later on for the actual ending.

Secondly, and this is what makes matters much worse, this DLC will NOT be available for all platforms in which the game was released. Those who bought the PC version of the game will have to settle for a gimped version of the game without the option of paying for the DLC to see the real ending of the story.

Finally, it was not announced before the game's release that such DLC would be exclusive to certain platforms. In the case of the two games cited above, it was known well before their release which platforms would be getting the DLC, giving customers the opportunity to make a well informed purchase.

If you are a PC gamer like myself, be wary of future Ubisoft releases, they have done this before with FarCry 2, and are showing no signs of giving PC gamers any respect. If you are a console gamers, while this may not affect you right now, also be wary, as Ubisoft may decide next that your gaming platform of choice doesn't deserve an integral part of a game you have paid full price for.

Customer Review: Not for "Sands of Time" Fans
Summary: 3 Stars

In purchasing this game used, I attempted to keep an opened mind for the new Prince of Persia. Simply put, if you loved Sands of Time, you will oppose this game in every way. The pastel graphics weren't exactly a bad idea, however I felt it took away from the authencity of being in the place and time as the prince.

The controls are very easy to pick up, but it just doesn't have that smooth feeling that you receive from the previous titles. It just didn't warp me in, the way that the first prince did. The dialogue is completely corney, and again, takes away from the authentic feeling that was originally introduced.

I put in about a total of 10 minutes playing time before I turned it off in dissapointment. Not to say all and all that it's a bad game, but the creator definitely stirred away from what made the game great.

UPDATE 07/08/09

So I decided to pick the game up again at my local gamestop used to invest a little more time with it. Unfortunately I still hold the same dislike towards the game as previously felt, as another reviewer hand stated, it's basically just eye candy, but nothing really beyond that. I'm pretty much just playing through to complete the game for easy achievment points now, because the game isn't challenging at all, but the graphics and destination is quite beautiful to look at, eye candy, that's all... I plan on taking it back to gamestop within 7 days for a full refund.

Customer Review: The XBox Version CRASHED on me
Summary: 1 Stars

My console game CRASHED!?! Within the first hour of playing. In the middle of a BOSS Fight, without letting me save before hand. Which means that I have to "START" the game all over again, as if I NEVER played it at all.

Are you f__king kidding me? A console game crashed? Did I just step back into the 80's? On the Atari 2600? It's 2009, THIS should be a NON-issue. I mean really? That's the whole reason that you play games on a console -- because this kind of thing should NEVER HAPPEN.

But it did, and I don't want to play it again and have MOVE-ON to something else -- that DOESN'T CRASH. I didn't get defeated and have to restart the level over again, the game crashed! Basically, Ubisoft through this game out the door. How did you miss something like THAT? How many game have you made? How many programmers did you have on your staff --- nobody caught this bug? This is what we call a "Major Class A Bug" -- one that stops the game play completely.

With your crappy "Image" Series, and now this? I'm sorry, but Ubisoft cannot be trusted to make good games at all. And you have NOTHING but yourselves to blame. No game reviewer told me anything, that I didn't figure out on my own with $[...] bucks less in my pocket.

Customer Review: Good game ... But ..
Summary: 4 Stars

This installment of POP has many things going for it, and then it has a few that aren't as good.

Like most others, I could also go on and on about the scenic vistas and the top notch graphics. The game's a great platformer but combat is ... well different.

Many people go on about how its impossible to die because Elika, the protagonist's magic-enabled companion pulls him back (literally) from the threshold of death every time he's on the verge of dying. But when this happens, the enemy's life replenishes a bit as well. In most other games, players keep on dying and reloading the fight till they execute a near flawless sequence in which the enemy's life bar wears out before the players. In this too, one would have to do that to defeat the bosses in boss battles - execute a near flawless sequence in which you deplete the enemy's life faster than they can regenerate it. In theory, the same thing but cuts out the frustration of reloading the combat sequence from the beginning and repeated cinematic cutbacks - Just continuous fighting till you're done. The bosses also change states quite often in which only certain types of attacks work and bring them back to normal. When fighting the corrupted soldiers, one trick that usually works is to push them against a wall or to the edge - they get killed regardless of how much life they have left ... and the game goes on. The combat sequences depend a lot on timely deflections which allow the players to strike back without getting knocked down ... unless of course, the player's return assault is also deflected.

The game seems to be inclined more towards its platforming than combat. I missed the variety of traps/mazes/puzzles from Sands of Time. The story is good .... not the best yet though. And at one point, gameplay does feel a little repetitive. One fairly irritating element is the conversation between the sometimes overly cocky 'Prince' and Elika. The icon keeps on appearing and you have to keep clicking the LT for short snippets of conversation.

The whole game has one very nice and slightly haunting musical refrain with pipes joining in at the crescendo which goes very well with the game. Seems a little short though ...

Overall, a good game, but would rather see the next installment move towards a Sands of Time type game while retaining features like continuous combat, superb graphics and the gorgeous, expansive landscapes.

Customer Review: Great Game and worth the wait for its release!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was one awesome game. I have played the other two Prince of Persia games on PC and thought they were awesome too! The graphics are much better than previous years. It took me three days to beat but that was with continuous play and skimming through the levels and not collection the light orbs. If you like a challenging game, similar to Tomb Raider, then this game is for you. You will become hooked to the POP series of games. When does the next one come out?
