Video Game Reviews of Soul Calibur IVCustomer Review: It's a great fighting game. Summary: 3 StarsI am a fan of sparring games like this one and the Mortal Kombat series. This one does a pretty good job graphics and gameplay-wise, but as others have mentioned, the story itself is negligible and it is really only good if you have someone to play against.
I think the most frustrating for me was that it does not save the custom characters. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I am pretty sure I'm not. I first spent almost an hour piddling around with all the customizations and coloring of my character, then I played the character a few rounds and like it. I left the game only to return to find that the character was no long there...where did it go?? So every time I want to play a custom character, I have to try and recreate the original. That's pretty annoying.
Also, I am known to be a button masher sometimes. This game won't let you do that. I get frustrated easily when my character is just standing there, not doing anything except blocking. I try to do combinations on the fly, by basically making them up and hoping for the best because each character has so many special moves and combinations that I don't have the patience to sit there at stare at the list, which you can only access in the middle of a fight.
For a fighting game, it's good if you want to work out some frustration from the real world, like a bad work day. But as a game that has story progression or any kind of logical flow, it falls flat.
I gave it a mediocre rating because it doesn't quite rate four stars, but doesn't suck bad enough to be less than three. The game doesn't really suck, but for the amount of money you pay for it, you kind of get gyped. It's just a sparring game. There isn't much to it.
