Customer Review: Buyer beware! Xbox 360 elite refurb'd by Microsoft only functioned 45 minutes!

I purchased an Xbox 360 today from a game retailer, it is the same as this one: An Xbox 360 Elite refurbished by Microsoft. I have an original Xbox, and they weren't the most reliable product in the world, but the games were fantastic, and I've wanted to play Halo 3 for a while now. I waited this long to purchase an Xbox 360 because of the multitude of problems with them, and hoped by waiting a few years those design and manufacturing defects would have been addressed. They have not been, apparently.
I unpacked my Xbox, and put it in a well ventilated place - on top of a stack of stereo gear that is all turned off, so none of it is generating heat, and the room is very cool. Where it is, it is totally surrounded by cool air. I also sat it down horizontally, for best air flow. The folks who stand them up on the side, as they are often pictured, block some vents on the side of the machine that aid in air flow. I hooked it all up, started the Xbox up, went through the bit of setup that you need to go through making an Avatar and such, and then started playing Halo 3. The graphics were awesome, I was enjoying the game, but 30 minutes after turning the Xbox 360 on I started to get occasional lines in my picture. After 45 minutes, the video completely died. I can still hear my game and all its sounds, but I have no video. After a bit of research online I found out this is an increasingly common problem, and is caused by the same thing as the dreaded Red Ring of Death: Overheating, and woefully incompetent thermal design overall. Come on, seriously, this thing dies 45 minutes after I turn it on? This happens to lots of other ppl, and Microsoft expects me to take them seriously when they give lip service to quality and stability in their products? Get real Bill Gates! Someone should go after these clowns with the Lemon law.
Luckily, I had the foresight, and the mistrust of Microsoft, to spend an extra $20 on the product replacement warranty where I purchased this item. I will take it back for an exchange, and keep doing so over, and over, and over, and over, and over, until I finally get an Xbox 360 that works reliably, as advertised and promised. If you don't get a product replacement warranty, and have to depend on the Microsoft warranty, you will be sending it in, paying for shipping, and waiting 6 to 8 weeks for it to come back.... hopefully repaired.
As a side note, what does work 100% reliably and as promised is the Wii that I purchased about 6 months ago. It works flawlessly, never fails, never hiccups or has a problem, and cost much less. If you're buying something for your kids folks, I strongly recommend looking at the Wii before the Xbox 360. Xbox has great game titles (like the Halo series), and that's why I wanted this system. However, you can have all the greatest game titles in the world on your system and it does NO good if the system only works for 45 minutes, and has a well deserved reputation for being a piece of junk. Until I can get back into town to exchange this I have an expensive paperweight. I will be buying all of my Xbox 360 games USED to avoid giving another red cent to Micro$haft, and I will never purchase one of their products again. 5 years is more than enough time to have the bugs worked out of these systems and honor the warranties to fix the lemons already sold Mr. Gates. In the future, Nintendo will be getting the money I spend on gaming systems and games. Why? Because they sell me a product that works as advertised, reliably.
