Video Game Reviews of Halo Wars Limited

Customer Review: Another great Halo game, if you like RTS games
Summary: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this game for what it is. First of all it was made around a great franchise, Halo. It is VERY true to the Halo roots and almost everything that can be the same is. That ranges from not only the look but also the sound and the movement. While this game is not quite as extensive as many RTS games, such as Age of Empires (which is made by the same people) it is a great console version. While it is the first console RTS game I have played, I was very happy with it. Many people who are just a fan of Halo will like this game. Some will not. Anyone who is a fan of both Halo and RTS will love this game. The Limited Edition was well worth it if you wanted the Mythic Map pack earlier, or haven't gotten either Halo Wars or bought it from the marketplace (4/9/09). It comes with some other nice items that are shown on Amazon.

Make sure you realize that this is not like Halo 1-3 which were First-Person Shooters. You are not Master Chief and you are not playing as if you were one character and seeing what they see. You command many people at one time and send them to fight other armies. This is a fantastic game and well worth the money for the Limited Edition.

Customer Review: A Great Console RTS
Summary: 4 Stars

At first, I was really skeptical about liking this game. I wasn't entirely sure it would be as high of quality as other real time strategy games like Age of Empires. After downloading the demo, I discovered I was pleasantly incorrect.

The campaign is challenging, fun, and contains gorgeous cut scenes. The actual game graphics are so-so, but it doesn't take anything away from the experience. The story is very well integrated to the overall game experience and will keep you playing even if you get frustrated.

The online co-op campaign is very much the same, but you have to share units and resources. This can get a little obnoxious if you don't plan ahead or the person you're playing with is a resource hog. I applaud Ensemble for even adding a co-op campaign option, but it does need improvement.

Online skirmishes and death matches are a blast (especially when playing with friends). There's an abundant of units and leaders to choose from, and unlike the campaign, you have your own resources and units when playing with someone else. The only issue I've had with this feature is occasionally I'll experience some lag. It has never lasted for more than thirty seconds, but this could be a huge problem for those of you with slower Internet connections.

Skirmishes and death matches against the AI are great when you're alone and in need of something to do. With four levels of difficulty to choose from, you can decide if you'd like to be challenged or if you'd like to crush everything in your path. The difficulty curve has been improved from the demo, so don't worry about legendary mode being too easy.

The controls are mapped out great. It's slightly annoying that I have to scroll around, but the d-pad will jump you from base to base. Every other aspect of the controls, however, works perfectly and quickly.

The music adds a lot to the game. It really sets the mood and went above and beyond my expectations. I'll probably end up buying the soundtrack if I see it on sale somewhere.

Also, the Limited Edition is worth buying if you really want the Mythic Map Pack for Halo 3. I did buy the Limited Edition, and was disappointed that it didn't come with more exclusive downloads (the Honor Guard Wraith really isn't all that special). If you're not interested in the Mythic Map Pack, then don't get the Limited Edition.

Overall, I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a great game. It's still not as good as Age of Empires, but this belongs in everyone's Xbox 360 collection.

Customer Review: Great RTS from someone who dislikes RTS games
Summary: 5 Stars

Being the complete opposite of the armchair general type, I was hesitant about acquiring this game. However, the fact that I'm a big fan of the Halo Series, and didn't want to wait for the Halo 3 Mythic Map packs to be released on April 9th for download, I reluctanctly purchased this game.

To my pleasant surprise, the control schematics and gameplay was intuitive, with a relative short learning curve.

Graphics was crisp, great storyline and cinematics as expected from the Halo franchise.

2 player online co-op campaign.
Up to 6 player online adversarial where you can mix it AI if you don't have 6 live players.

Great fun. Must buy if Halo fan, and if you want to play an RTS game without all the complicated controls from most RTS games.

Customer Review: Console RTS Done Right
Summary: 4 Stars

Those new to the RTS genre, or looking for something fun while sitting on the couch, have a huge opportunity with this game. Though not as complex as some of its PC brethren, there is enough unit development and play variation to keep it engaging. Where the game exceeds expectations, however, is the 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 engagements... these can develop into epic battles that truly demonstrate what an online console RTS should deliver.

Customer Review: Prequel-Halo
Summary: 5 Stars

Set twenty years before Instillation 01, Halo Wars was given a lot of room to play with in the realm of the Halo Universe. Anyone who is a fan of the series should like this game and most will replay it. If you're new to the series, this game would make a good introduction to the Universe of Halo. However, anyone who's played the other games might start to wonder, "just what is going on here?" Several times it appears that they're going off canon, but worry not, all will be explained in time. In the end this game goes a long way to expand the canon of the series and be fun while doing it. If you're on the fence, believe me, it's worth it.
As a side note. This game has the best cut-scene that I've ever seen before.
