Customer Review: Beautiful all around ... Summary: 5 StarsGears of War ~ EPIC/Microsoft ...
This game is beautiful in every aspect of gaming. The environments are lush and realistic, the gameplay is near flawless, and the character mannerisms are simply amazing. During the single player modes, the cutscenes almost make it seem as if you were watching a movie! It's a great storyline (it did take me a little while to actually play the game and figure out the storyline, the online gaming is soooo addictive!), with a great plot and dialouge. It's also nice to have a friend tag along on the single player missions, they get hard if you choose the harder difficulties. The Allied A.I. isn't always too bright, but who cares, you're the star of the show anyway!
The absolute best part of this game, might I say, is the online gaming. I don't think there is a better multiplayer 1st Person shooter out right now, there never was, and it's going to be very difficult to beat this! I think Lost Planet might give it a run for it's money, but let's take a quick glance at the multiplayer ups and downs ...
Up's ...
Only 4 on a team, so it's rather personalized. With headsets, you and the other 3 teammates can communicate to stratagize. If you kill 1 or 2 enemies, you feel accomplished. Whereas, in a multiplayer game with many players (10+ per team), ya get 1 or 2 kills, and ya feel worthless!
The shooting system/movement system is very easy to get the hang of, but trust me, you're going to want to get the hang of it before playing online! The kids that play online are gooooooood!
The maps aren't too big, but they aren't too small ... I like it! You tend to lose intrest and quit a game when the map is too big, due to the fact that the last 2 combatants standing, are generally wondering around aimlessly looking for each other!
Lastly for the Up's ... you have the ability to host a multiplayer game, but make it public (any/everyone can join) or private (play w/ just gamers whom you invite!)
The Down's (no worries, there's not a lot!) ...
DO NOT ... I repeat ... DO NOT, try learning how to play this game online! The people playing online are unbelieveably good! It's ridiculous! It gets discouraging playing this game online at times, until you've mastered the Sniper Rifle that is (MWWWAAAAHAHAHAHAHA)!
There are a few gliches that need to be worked out. "Frag-tagging" (Sticking an enemy with a grenade), is all too common in multiplayer gaming ... 7/10 times you die, it will be from a grenade stuck to your head. Some of the other weaponry could be patched up, and more weapons could have been added ... but I can patienly wait for a sequel!
Lastly, this game is truly not meant for anyone under the age of ... I personally think, 16. There is a lot of detailed blood and gore, excessive and profane language in the dialogue during the single player campaigns, and the kids you play with online don't usually take too kindly to losing, and they let you know that verbally (Half the time it sounds like your 10 year old neighbor reciting Richard Pryor! F-Bombs are dropped frequently!).
All in all, this game is AWESOME! A++++ to EPIC and Microsoft for a job well done! Watch out though! It's reeeeaallllllllllllllllllyyy addictive! I myslef, along with my roomate and his younger brother, have stayed up to the weee hours of the morning playing this one! Have fun!

Customer Review: Sets a new standard Summary: 5 StarsIn true Microsoft fashion, Gears of War was released laden with bugs and annoyances with a promise of a corrective patch in the not-to-distant-future.
Emergence day, I received my copy of GOW CE.
Opening cinematic clips were impressive and game play was stunning. I was floored. Then, 5 minutes into the first level, I dove across a bridge and ended up "frozen" in place. Of course I could move in a circle and reload my weapon, but I wasn't able to fire my weapon. I sat there while the enemy Locusts tore me apart.
I was disappointed, to the say the least, expecting a game full of these bugs. I am happy to say those utterly frustrating moments are few and far between. I am embarrassed to say I have experienced probably 200 hours of game play (online and local/story mode). During that time I've experienced 50-100 "glitches".
Only 10 or so of those have been major enough to cause me to shut down the system and restart.
Don't let that scare you. The experience is awesome enough to keep me cursing and spitting fire while I'm interrupted for 2 or 3 minutes while it loads up.
Here's what's awesome about the game:
1. It's intense. It is the most intense fighting game I've ever experienced.
2. It's mature. The entire story line is utterly raw. The language is foul. The blood and guts are impressively realistic, in an exaggerated animated way.
3. It's scary. I have 3 kids (7, 4, and 3). They LOVE to watch me play. This is the only game they will not/cannot sit through, simply because they are "afraid of the monsters". The 7 year old and I play split screen sometimes, and she actually dropped the controller to cover her eyes (we can debate parenting style later).
4. It's beautiful. The artwork and visuals for this game are the most impressive I have ever seen.
5. It's easy. "Easy to learn, hard to master" is a good description. But the controls are intuitive. NOTE: My wife, who is a hardcore Halo 2 gamer, despises this game. She says they made the controls different than other games just to be ornery. I disagree. But most people I've spoken with agree with me. The controls fit the feel of the game.
I have complaints. Most of them around online play. I once said anyone could be happy to own an Xbox if only for Halo 2.
I will go so far as to say one could own an Xbox 360 just for GOW.
PS: I don't think the CE is worth an extra 10 bux. The artwork is nice, and the video is "ok", but the game is the same in both editions. The tin is pretty, but it takes up more real estate than it needs to.
Customer Review: Simply Breathtaking, You'll Be Hooked From the Get Go, BUT... Summary: 1 StarsGears of War is everything you've heard it is, and then some.
While I wasn't a fan of third-person shooters, this game just hooked me and wouldn't let go. The 3rd person format allows for a well-developed system of "cover", or hiding behind objects during intense firefights. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be running and jumping around from concrete slab, to burned car, to doorway, seamlessly while punishing the dreaded Locust.
The concept of "active reloading" will keep your fingers busy during the otherwise boring reload.
The graphics are out of this world, and put any other shooter out on the market to shame (words cannot describe, you have to see the game to believe it).
This is an ADULT game, with violence that is not for the squeamish. The blood and guts factor is this game is phenomenal and is guaranteed to keep you yelling out loud with every chainsaw execution and head shot.
As a seasoned gamer who grew up with the "boss of each level" concept, this game brought back memories with situations like the Berserker at the end of Act 1 (great fun).
The immersion level of this game is up their as well. You'll find yourself talking in the storyline lingo, with expressions such as, "Oh no! A Boomer!".
Best shooter for the 360 out right now, hands down.
BUT! There is an apparent problem that this game is causing. During the whole of the campaign (I recommend you start out on "Hardcore" setting, "Casual" is a joke) my 360 would freeze now and then with the message of "Disk is Dirty" coming up. I checked the disk, which was clean, so I chalked it up to the fact that the game was rented. When the last cutscene ended, the game locked up permanently, and I couldn't load it at all after that. I tried 4 of my other games, which I used to play problem free, to no avail. I looked this issue up and I'm not the only one who has fallen victim to the Gears of War curse. There are numerous blogs throughout the internet complaining about the same issue (there's a review below with the same problem). After calling Microsoft, it turns out that I now need to get my 360 repaired at a cost of $150. Again, this is not an isolated issue! It's been happening a lot, just look it up.
Once I get my console fixed, I intend to buy the game anyway. It's THAT good.
Customer Review: A Great Game Summary: 5 StarsThis game has to be one of the greatest games ever made. The graphics in this game are the best I have ever seen. The AI is smart and the game is actually challenging. It is now so hard that you won't ever want to play it but it is hard enough to make you want to play it more and more. The controles are easy once you get used to them. I have only found two things that are wrong with this game and that is that the campaign is a little short. Don't get me wrong its fun but it is short compared to other things. And the other thing is that there is no back story to the game. Once you start it you are in the action. Overall this is the best game that I have played up to date. I would only recomend this if you are a mature gamer because this game has a lot of language in it. This is a great game and the collectors edition is worth the money.
