Video Game Reviews of Advent RisingCustomer Review: AN EPIC AND CINEMATIC ADVENTURE YOU WON'T WANT TO END 8.75 OUT OF 10 Summary: 5 StarsMajesco games are mixed bag. Some games end up being good like this game and Bloodrayne. Others end up being totally crappy and become horrific nightmares to play like Drake of the 99 Dragons (I played that sack of crap all the way through and it sucked every step of the way!). Of all the Majesco games I've played, Advent Rising had the most potential, but the game was released at a bad time and didn't make much money. No more trilogy. No more hardcore games from Majesco. Damn... I'm also saddened to see that Drake of the 99 Dragons is worth almost as much as this game is for a brand new copy. Shame, shame.
WHAT THE GAME IS: I don't see why this game didn't get more buzz. This game basically feels like Halo in third person but better, and with a Star Wars kick. An alien prophecy has stated that Earth is in trouble from maniacal and homicidal alien force known as the Seekers who before killing their victims they scan their brains. You are a pilot and you must save the universe from this force and gain new powers and weapons to stop them. This story was written by Orson Scott Card; a famous science-fiction writer. At first the story is slow and incomprehensible. One moment I'm trying to land a ship, the next moment I'm in a bar fight, the next moment my character is making out with his girlfriend, and the next moment the characters uncover a grand plot to destroy the world. But once you play a game for a few hours the story stabilizes itself along with the rest of the game.
GRAPHICS: This game can look great at times with its stellar level designs. But textures are an issue at times and the character models look a little sloppy. I also noticed some frame-rate problems which causes some slowdown problems if battles get too hectic. The creature designs are also a plus.
MUSIC: The score is done by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and it is stellar and really knows how to bring on the epic feel and it provides an adrenaline rush too.
SOUND: Solid voice-work, explosions, and nice weapon sounds.
GAMEPLAY: There are some technical problems with the gameplay unfortunately. For example the vehicle controls are difficult to get used to because they rely exclusively on the analog sticks, but you eventually get the hang of them. Also the lock-on system is a little touchy and can lock onto enemies when you don't want it to. This especially is not helpful when you're trying to run for cover because your health is low and you end up dying because it locked onto an enemy. Also your telekinetic abilities to toss enemies like rag dolls is difficult to learn and takes much practice throughout the game to get it right. The shooting mechanics work properly as they should and you get a nice selection of weapons to choose from. Jumping works well along with hand-to-hand combat. There are almost no puzzles like unlocking doors, most of your time is spent defeating enemies and figuring out where to go next. This game also has great pacing which is another plus. This may sound like a laundry list of complaints, but once you get the controls down this game is one helluva ride.
OVERALL: This game is great, too bad Majesco won't make the trilogy because it was a sales flop. This game is worth a buy, especially if you're bored with your current selection of shooters or you like Halo or Star Wars because the game feels like a mix of the two sci-fi epics. At least this game was a helluva lot better than the last third-person shooter I played from Majesco called Drake of the 99 Dragons (BAD MAJESCO, BAD!!).
THE GOOD: Epic storyline, cool powers, good level and creature designs, stellar music, lots of weapons, good gunplay, vehicle gameplay segments, interesting dialogue and characters, great pacing, it's a ride you won't want to end, and some surprising moments in the story.
THE BAD: Controls take time to get used to for things like driving and telekinetic powers, frame-rate problems, texture problems, story is slow, no trilogy as promised.
Description of Advent RisingAdvent Rising is the first in an epic trilogy of action/adventure games, offering precise, refinedplay-dynamics with action-packed adventure and style, wrapped in a visually imaginative universe. A common legend pervades the galaxy -- that of a powerful, highly intelligent ancient race that will one day deliver the universe. They are known as "Humans"; Many religious and philosophical views have developed around these legends, but a group called the Seekers knows that Humans are real. They consider Humans an enemy, and under the guise of peaceful exploration they've travelled the cosmos destroying human colonies. Until now.
