Video Game Reviews of Rock Band Special Edition Xbox 360Customer Review: Most addictive game ever Summary: 4 StarsSince my Nintendo gamecube broke a couple years ago I've been sadly systemless, missing out on all the cool games coming out and feeling out of place when my friends talk about how awesome they are at Guitar Hero. I never really cared too much to tell the truth, but sometimes when I have nothing to do I just want to sit down and shoot some zombies or steal a car or something (in a video game, not real life mind you).
Then, on the fourth of July I went over to a friend's house and played Rock Band for the first time. Of course I'd played Guitar Hero before this but I always hated the guitar. It's too small and the buttons have too much space between them. But Rock Band was completely different. You don't have to go solo all the time, you can have an actual BAND complete with drums and vocals and, if you have an extra guitar controller, a bass. My friends and I played that game all night long, and when I went home I stopped by Wal-Mart and bought an X-Box 360 just so I could play Rock Band at home. I haven't stopped playing it since.
My rockers name is Andrew Lee, and my bands called Stupified, and we're right now on a world tour. I play lead guitar, while my brothers do drums and vocals. I'm learning how to play bass (the real thing) JUST because I loved this game so much and wanted to learn how to play the real thing. I've never played such a fun game before.
But there are a few things which I don't like. One, the drum set is VERY flimsy. First the drumsticks which came with the game broke, and then the foot peddle broke (we can still use it though; Thank God for duck tape), and then the flaps started falling off the pads. Although I love the game the drum set really disappointed me in how easily it started to fall apart (although in all fairness my brother does hit it pretty hard). Also the drums and guitar make a lot of noise so that if your not close to the speakers all you'll hear is a loud tapping sound as the drumsticks hit the drum pads. Fortunately Rock Band 2 will have these problems solved.
The song list was a hit and miss for me. Although I loved "Enter Sandman" by Metalica, "When You Were Young" by The Killers, and "Learning to Fly" by the Foo Fighters, "Creep" by Radiohead and "Maps" by (don't remember) nearly put me to sleep. It's pretty much hit and miss for the rest. Some songs I'll love, some I'll hate, but I guess that's what downloadable songs are for. Also, look for an old song from Southpark called "Timmy and the Lords of the Underworld." It's really funny because Timmy from the show is actually singing the song. TIMMY! TIMMY-TOM-TIMMY!
So Rock Band or Guitar Hero III? Well lets make this easy, Rock Band has drums and vocals, and Guitar Hero does not, which means that the only things Guitar Hero has to offer is its guitar controller and the song list. Although Guitar Hero does have a really great song list, any advantage it might have is negated by the fact that you can download new songs for Rock Band. You can do the same for Guitar Hero III, what I'm saying though is that they negate each other.
And I'd also go so far as to say Rock Band's guitar controller is way more comfortable and easier to use then Guitar Hero's. It's bigger for one thing, and the buttons are bigger and don't have any gaps between them, meaning you won't ever put your fingers in the gaps between buttons (guilty as charged). There are also fret buttons at the bottom of the neck for children or people with small hands. They can also be played without strumming during solos. So to me it's a no brainier; unless you've already invested in Guitar Hero guitar controllers then go Rock Band. Guitar Hero IV will have drums and vocals in October, but fortunately Rock Band II 2 will be out around that time with improvements to its drums set including three symbols which can be added on (kind of puts Guitar Hero IV's drum set to shame, seeing how it only has five pads and Rock Band 2 will have seven not including the foot peddle).
Guitar Hero is cheaper to buy, but Rock Band's set comes with a guitar, drums, and a microphone. To get that same value you'd have to buy two extra guitars for Guitar Hero, by which time you'd spend more money then if you'd just bought Rock Band. So go with Rock Band, and I promise you won't regret it.
ROCK ON!
