Video Game Reviews of Dead Space 2 Collector's Edition

Customer Review: Superb survival horror experience in a questionable collector's edition
Summary: 4 Stars

Dead Space 2 will not be forgotten when the end of year accolades start rearing their heads. Trust me, the game is just that good. Usually, January is considered to be a kind of dumping ground for games that aren't expected to do particularly well. Its a similar tactic used in the movie industry, which also employs the idea of releasing noteworthy titles nearer to the end of the year and by default, awards season. Dead Space 2 takes this concept and blasts it into deep, dark space with a knockout experience that any self respecting horror fan must endure for themselves. The first Game of the Year contender has arrived... in January!

This is a damn fine game that improves on just about everything the first one did, a feat that fairly few sequels get right. I'm a huge fan of the original Dead Space game and I had already made up my mind to get the sequel before the damn thing had even been formally announced. The first game is a game that is very close to my heart as it is the first game that scared me so bad it left me feeling like I was going to suffer a massive heart attack. For the ten or so hours it took to complete it, the sensation of terror and dread never let up.

Dead Space 2 feels very much the same way. It has a very 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' feel to it but those familiar with the first one will feel very much at home while noticing all the improvements made to it. The biggest change to the game now is that the protagonist, Issac Clarke, actually speaks now. In the first outing, he was a silent character, yet you somehow managed to connect with him. I think the choice to have him speak was a good one. It took me a bit to accept it but there are moments that kind of tug at you where you can literally feel the man's anguish. Without a speaking voice, I think some of the more important moments would not have played so well.

I simply cannot give this game enough praise. A lot of fans were worried that the game was going to be more action oriented and not as scary as the original due to comments made by the developers early on. This is definitely not the case. Trust me, under the right conditions, this game will scare you bad enough that you may want to go dig your old stuffed penguin out of storage and cuddle it in the rear recesses of your closet.

And I'm talking bad scares, the kind that kind of hurt in a way. I think most impressive about the game is that there are moments of sheer horror that outdo the original in several places. Without giving anything away, there was a moment later on in the game where my wife said that she literally saw the color run out of my face. I'd love to tell you exactly where and when but it would be at the risk of exposing a pretty surprising moment in the story. I think anyone affected by the first will know exactly when the moment is when they get to it. I want to commend the developers for not straying far from what made the original an instant classic in my eyes. Frightening you is not a by product here, its their full intention and Visceral Games succeeds with flying colors.

The graphics are gorgeous, the monsters nastier than ever, the sound and music get two Megan Fox sized thumbs up (the girl has some big thumbs so take that with a grain of salt) and the story draws you in, offering up slightly longer play time than the first. The first few minutes go down, and I kid you not, as probably one of the most intense openings for a game, ever. The controls feel much more fluid this time around. As for the multiplayer, I haven't played it much save for a few rounds but it plays a lot like Left 4 Dead and that's all fine by me. What I did play of it was pretty intense. You get a lot of replay value with this game in that you can start a new campaign over again with all of your upgrades intact but don't get too comfortable with that fact. The game's toughest difficulty is Hardcore which gives you far fewer power ups, heavier damages and three saves to get the job done. That's right, three. As in, you die, whoop-de-doo, back to your last save. Prepare to embrace your inner masochist.

As much as I loved the game itself, I was not very pleased with the collector's edition of this game. I hate to say it, but... I have to. For one, the biggest slap in the face to Xbox 360 owners (I have both a PS3 and Xbox 360 but opted for the 360) is the fact that the PS3 collector's edition is just about identical but comes with "Dead Space: Extraction" (originally a Wii title) packed inside as an added bonus. I mean, seriously? And for the same price? I would have thought that Visceral Games and EA would have wanted to get as many people exposed to this title which sold barely any units on the Wii, yet provides fans with more Dead Space mythology to take in. Quite stupid to cheat 360 fans, especially considering that the title apparently sold better on the 360 to begin with but whatever. Also packaged is a mini plasma cutter replica which doesn't even come packaged with the batteries you need to make it light up when you press the trigger. Would a stand for the thing have been too much to ask? Yippee. The inclusion of the soundtrack makes me very happy and in my opinion is the only thing that makes this edition worth it. It's great music that Jason Graves has composed and it's less bombastic than the first but just as good, if not better. You also get a code for a downloadable Zealot suit, a weapon and... that's it. Oh yeah, a postcard sized lithograph that... zzzzzzzz. Oh sorry, not worth mentioning. Not even behind the scenes documentaries.

Boo.

They really needed to come up with something more substantial than this. The game is epic in all senses of the word and quite literally deserves much better treatment than this thrown together hodge podge of junk, insult of a left out bonus game not withstanding. I'm actually kind of disgusted. I'll stand up and say that collector's editions like this are the reason that many of my fellow gamers refuse to pick up collector's editions or tend to look at them with a hint of suspicion. I mean, even the box it's packed in is cheap and flimsy. I would've expected packaging more akin to the limited edition of Halo: Reach. That, at the very least, would have been a good place to start in terms of presentation.

I would say drive past this one. I feel bad saying it but I think you'll be better off in the end, unless you can get it for cheaper than its going for at the time of this writing. The game is a masterpiece and more than worth your hard earned cash. The packaging for this collector's edition ain't much but fluff and will definitely go down as an edition you will open maybe twice before it gets relegated to the shelf with all the other worthless collector's editions you probably own.

I really hope that Visceral takes the time to put together a fine package for the collector's edition of Dead Space 3.

What, did you really doubt it was coming? This game makes it pretty clear that its gonna happen (stay after the credits!). Looking at early sales figures, I'd figure it was a no-brainer regardless. It's outselling the original game at this point by a margin of 2 to 1.

And yes, I'm getting it. But I'm not getting a half-assed collector's edition. And neither should you.
