Video Game Reviews of MotoGP 09/10Customer Review: Great attempt at a MotoGP console game Summary: 3 Stars
MotoGP 09/10 for Xbox
Having playing MotoGP 05 on the PC, I found it somewhat easier to play MotoGP on the Xbox because of the controller. Replicating a motorcycle control interface for a PC or game system is difficult, as turning requires leaning the motorcycle first. Unfortunately, even MotoGP 09/10 falls somewhat short in the realism department.
The player's head bobs and weaves every which way possible, except for looking where you want to go. In racing sims like GTR 2 or GTR Evo, you can adjust a setting that allows your head to follow the apex of a turn which simulates the rider/driver looking at where they want to go. In MotoGP 09/10, the player's head doesn't tilt upright while leaning and doesn't follow the apex of the turn, making it very disorienting to control the bike.
Luckily, the player can start in the 125cc class, which will soon be replaced with the Moto3 250cc single-cylinder 4-stroke class of MotoGP racing. Moto2, the 600cc 4-cylinder 4-stroke class, and MotoGP class remains for the current seasons. The controls do take awhile to become familiar as it is not very intuitive. Cornering requires leaning the bike, and MotoGP doesn't simulate the gyroscopic effects of the motorcycle very well.
The graphics are fairly decent, although they don't come close to Forza 3, Gran Turismo 5, or other Xbox racing games. The sound is pretty bad. There is an announcer that arbitrarily speaks out options. Selecting the 125cc class will make him say "1 2 5", and selecting the manual transmission will make him say "MANUAL!" The engine sounds aren't that great either, although there is only so much you can do to replicate the exhilarating high RPM sounds of the motorcycle engines.
There is a lot of room for improvement in the simulation aspect. The rider's head needs to move properly rather than bob/weave in random directions. There's not much to do other than race. There aren't any fun racing events like drag racing, speedway challenges, and other gearhead activities found in Forza 3.
Overall: 3/5
