Video Game Reviews of Call of Duty: World at WarCustomer Review: Flamethrowers and Zombies anyone? Summary: 5 Stars
I've read some negative reviews on this game, and after playing it once, I can say that I agreed. I don't know what it is, but my first playthrough could be described as a "mildly enjoyable experience" at best. Let's face it, video games and movies and such are all enjoyed for the experience because most human beings live vicariously through stories and visuals. After playing through a second time, I realized that maybe this game is just as great as previous and favorite installments in the Call of Duty franchize, and just maybe it's been getting a mediocre rap because it's A: following in the wake of Modern Warfare, and B: It's another WWII shooter. Now granted it's not Modern Warfare at all, and I think most folks were ready to see COD move in that direction since WWII has been F***ed out a thousand times like your favorite song on the radio you can't stand now. But, what I've noticed about this game is that it has all of the favorite control schemes, and engine we all love so dear; plus they've made an effort to make this installment a slightly more gruesome, in-your-face, and maybe to some...unsettling.
I say unsettling because I've noticed that the designers have included dismemberment, more blood, and the sounds...oh the sounds of a man on fire sizzling, bubbling and screaming is a little farther than previous Call of Duty games have taken it. The gameplay is everybit as intense (and let's face it, if it's not -jack the diffeculty up) and it's got a certain "realistic grit" to it. It really seems like the developers have decided not to shield our eyes (or ears for that matter) and really tried to convey the gruesome reality of war. See, it doesn't sound like slicing through a shirt when you attack with a knife, now you really hear the effects of blood and tissue as a result. It's not really out of lines, nothing cartoony or overblown, but it's a change from the norm. When in sniper missions, or simply shooting anything with some punch, it's possible to literaly pop an enemy's head, or blow off an arm. It's not like it's every other bullet, or even a body shot will result in this, but it's what I guess would be a fairly accurate chance (if your aim's right) to pop a Nazi's head and watch his helmet bounce up and land on his corpse etc.
The game is divided into two fronts, like Modern Warfare, where you'll bouce back and forth between. This is nice for breaking up the scenery as you'll go from wet, hot jungles, to bombed out ruins of cities and farmlands. In the Pacific theatre, you'll play as Miller, a Marine rescued by his bothers in arms from certain bloodletting, and you have to fight your way through popular battles against the Japanese in the south Pacific. It's alot of caves, trenches, bunkers, and hiding behind logs in the jungle, but it's all done just fine and they added a flamethrower whcich is a bonus too. The Pacific battles all have good pacing, in fact, they move fairly quick. You'll be calling in rocket strikes, torching machine gun nests, shotgunning down short tunnels, and avoiding ambushes and Banzai attacks. The later two, I mentioned, are the bread and butter of the Pacific section. There's alot of ambushes, traps, and banzai attacks that will definately keep you on your toes. Like when dogs attack you, you have to strike a banzai attacker right before he guts you with his bayonet, wherebye your character will give him a hasty medical procedure with his knife in the neck. It's pretty intense and startling to hear "banzai!!!" but it's a great addition I enjoyed alot. The seldom used Pacific theatre was a good choice I feel, and it really gives you a sense of how determined the Japanese were and how tough it must have been.
I don't know about you, but when I play a COD game against Germans, I always like German weapons better. Playing the other front as a Russian soldier named Demitri (original, I know) I usually ditch my Russian weapons for a german MP40 and a German semi-auto rifle. All of the weapons are great in this game, I just prefer German guns and I know as long as I keep killing the other guys, I'll have ammo. This section of the game is about the Russian push into Germany after reagaining much of Russia. It's really no different than COD 2's Russian parts, but in this one your winning and advancing into Germany. Other than that, it's pretty standard. I'm not saying it isn't fun though, it's a great ride and worth checking out, but you'll be familiar with everything. You might get a little tired of Sgt. Reznov, who seems to follow you around and act like the company hype-man. He's always "comrad this, and fascist that, no mercy, no mercy" Real stereotypical stuff, but he's your best buddy and he always saves your hide.
After completing the game, your rewarded with a game called "Zombie Nazis" where you're in a creepy, bombed out building fighting off wave after wave of Zombies. The Zombies look great with glowing eyes, an akward shamble, and a thirst for your blood. You have to kill zombies to get credits, and with those you can buy weapons and ammo from icons on the walls. Each wave brings more zombies than the last, and you can rebuild the baricades on the windows and stock up between rounds. Sometimes, if your doing good enough, a zombie will drop an powerup, which will allow double points, instant kills etc. Nazi Zombies would have been something I would payed a few bucks for on Xbox live, but it's a nice little bonus reward for beating the game, and it's fun to play.
The weapons in World at War are mostly your standard affair, with the MP40's, M1 Garand, Panzerschreck, grenades and such you would expect from previous WWII games. This game, however, breathes a little life into these weapons with the dismemberment aspect, and there's Japanese guns to play with. They're nothing out of the ordinary with a machine gun similar to a sideways MP40, and a bolt action rifle that's no different than any other bolt-action rifle in the game. With the inclusion of the seldom touched Pacific theatre of war with Japan, there's an empshasis on flamethrowers for the trench, cave and bunker warfare. The flamethrower works wayyyyy better than in any other game I've played in a FPS. It's got great range, great detection, and it absolutely trumps anything in it's path. It mowes down trees, grass, and any Japanese soldier brave or stupid enough to run at you with this thing in your hands. I found myself playing through the game, perfectly satisfied with almost all of the weapons, with the exception of having to shoot most enemies a couple of times with rifles. But, I suppose it's only fair since throughout the game you'll end up taking a thousand bullets and still living to the end.
Like other COD games, sidemissions and cimatic parts are thrown in to break up the pace, such as a sniper mission in Russia, a "shooting from a plane" part in the Pacific, and a "let's shoot 20 tanks with our tank" part in Russia. 2 of the 3 are great: the sniping part is tense and cinematic, and the airplane shooter part is really done well with the way your character monkey swings throught he hull of the plane to reach another mounted gun while Kamikaze pilots are zipping around and attacking our ships. People aboard the relatively small plane hug the sides to let you go through as your character grabs handles and bulkheads to pull himself to his next weapon with great agility. The one section I didn't enjoy so much, but thankfully it's short, is the Russian tank mission. Not much to see here, just move, shoot, move, shoot. But, I never really thought driving a tank translated well onto videogames anyway, they always become tedious to me.
**Pros**
+This game's graphics are the best yet of the series. You can see the wrinkles in faces, the mud, shell casings, blood, and gore perfectly. Fire looks amazing and you can see the threads in clothing even.
+Sounds are really detailed and clear with the exception that guns sound a little "poppy" and weak.
+Controls are tight and customizable.
+everything you like about the Call of Duty series.
+Addition of Pacific theatre and Japanese tactics really keep you on your toes
+occasional dismemberment
+Split-screen co-op
+Zombie Niazis
+flamethrower
**Cons**
-Germans have flamethrowers
-It's WWII again (depending on where you stand)
-Guns seem kinda week sometimes and don't really thunder off like they should
-timeline skips around alot, and can leave you disconnected with where you are, and why your there
-the enemy is always a pro with grenades
-sometimes you have to advance to stop enemies from appearing
**Final thoughts**
All-in-all, Call of Duty 5 is a great FPS and a nice addition to the series. The gameplay is sharp and the action intense. The only thing I can see really holding this game back was the decision to revisit WWII, but I also enjoyed fighting in the Pacific war against Japan. The developers really changed the way the game is played with Banzai attackers and ambushes instead of the normal "they're over there, and we're over here" situation, which helps to break things up from the norm. Adding Zombie Nazis, and split-screen co-op was a nice touch as well, making Zombie Nazis a great possibility for party entertainment. I reccommend this game for fans of the series; most of the criticism I don't wholy agree with, and it's got nice bonuses that Modern Warfare didn't even have. Like I said, I had a hard time getting into the game at first, but after jacking the diffeculty up a bit, it really put me into the experience, and I like it just the same as COD2 and 4.
