Video Game Reviews of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2Customer Review: It's over already! Summary: 3 StarsCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
I guess I should first point out that I do not play online. I'll also point out that I'm not a diehard gamer and am 62 years old. Yes, some of us oldsters dabble about with gaming also! Given the fact that it seems to be an inherent nature of children having a knack, as it were, to working their collective way about with computers and playing video games with ease this only emphasizes my issues with MW2.
With that said, after all of the hype that I read on this game and it being voted as "Game of the Year" I was extremely disappointed! If you only plan on playing this game by yourself I would strongly suggest that you rent it. No worry about a late rental fee as you'll more than likely have it returned within only a few hours as that's about how long it takes to complete this game! As I pointed out, if I can complete this game in about three hours actual playing time (if that) I can well imagine that a teen/child will go through it in even less time! As to a child playing this game I'll comment on that later as they should definitely NOT!
It could very well be that the game designers were not all that concerned about the single player mode and were more focused about on line and co-op gaming. If that is the case they certainly achieved it as to totally ignoring the single player mode and leave you sitting there saying to yourself; "What...it's over already!" There are several contributing factors to the short game play aside from the overall shortness of the game script in itself. I'll try to make a comparison here if I may. I recently finished playing MOH Airborne and I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to playing it again and....again! It challenged you as to watching your health and ammo. Granted, it had check points when you achieved an objective but they were few and far in between and if by chance you were killed (which happens quite often) you had to start all over again. Such is not the case with MW2. Check points are more than abundant. If you get killed....no problem. You'll more than likely start out from where you left at. If you get seriously injured there is no need to worry about finding any health packs as none are needed. You just simply take cover and within seconds your health is fully restored. Did you run out of ammo? Hey, again no need to worry! The place is littered with other weapons and all you have to do is pick one up and continue! Now I ask you....just where is the challenge? There is a very simple answer to that as there is none! Ergo... the game is over before you realize it! I have absolutely no idea if there are cheat codes available for this game albeit I could never for the life of me understand why one would want to cheat on any game in the first place. If however there are cheat codes available for MW2 I really can't see any need for them whatsoever. Of course that is unless you wish to complete this game from start to finish during the half time break of a football game!
I will however give this game two thumbs up for its fantastic graphics, sound and depth of texture. I imagine I should have first played the first MW game as I had absolutely no idea why I was fighting and at times who I was fighting! Obviously a world war going on ( with the Russians?) The game simply started out by saying: "Five years later". OK...I'll give the game that, and as stated, I'm ignorant as to what the premise of this game is and I'll probably have to check out the first one so I can understand where this one picks up. I found myself playing more than one character (something I personally do not care for) and being shuffled about from one country to another to fight intense battles (but yet oh so easy) and never actually comprehending why I was there except for being given some objective shouted out at me constantly over and over and over again. Yeah...I heard you the first time now for the love of God, shut up already!
Now, a strong warning to parents here. I'm fully aware that this game has a rating of M (17+) and well deserved. I realize that children will however play games with such ratings and be that as it may, but there is one VERY disturbing sequence in this game which is TOTALLY uncalled for no matter what excuses the developers give for including it. There is one sequence where you are called upon to infiltrate an arms dealer. While being undercover you are brought to an airport and called upon to indiscriminately slaughter all of the passengers at the terminal with the other terrorists! One very disturbing scene was of a man crawling for safety while leaving a trail of blood! Luckily the designers left out any scenes of children at the airport. How very considerate of them! Granted, there is a warning that this sequence might possibly be disturbing to some (really!) and can be passed by without having any effect on the outcome of the game. If one is NOT disturbed by this sequence....???!!! I ask you then, why include it? Simply to satisfy the sick mind of the designers? Do you for one moment actually think that a child will read the warning and then decide to bypass this scenario? I think not.
Bottom line is that if you're mature enough MW2 lives up to its hype as for graphics but save your money if you plan to play this as a standalone and simply rent it if you can. It seems as though this game is strictly designed for those who wish to play co-op or online. In my opinion it leaves the person who wished only to play it alone will leave him wondering what happened to the length of the game and wanting his money back!
Customer Review: Great fun, but high price per minute Summary: 4 StarsI am rating this game based on how much my 11 year old son liked it.
He had been asking for it for several weeks, as his 2nd most desired holiday gift. He was ecstatic when he got it. He played it as much as we would let him, and told us it was the most fun game he had ever played.
However, he beat the game in about 3 days. It was an expensive pleasure if you look at the price per minute - hence the 4 star review.
Customer Review: Best Military Combat Game Ever!!! Summary: 5 StarsCoDMW-2 isn't perfect, but it's the best military combat game to date! Here's why:
Concept: 10/10
CoDMW-2 puts you in the heat of battle as a US Marine and a British Special Forces Operative. You'll be planting explosives, sniping, firing gatling guns, rescuing hostages, stealthily wiping out enemy bases, and using the most sophisticated military weaponry available. As in the first Call of Duty Modern Warfare, the action is fast and furious. It only takes a second to take out an enemy soldier, but it only takes a second for them to take you out as well. To make matters worse, bullets can go through wooden walls, so you really need to be careful about where you take cover. You can also use this to your advantage, and shoot enemies through some of the walls as well. CoDMW-2 offers a fairly short campaign with 4 difficulty levels, a wide range of stand-alone missions that you can play single player or two player through Xbox Live or Split Screen with 2 Controllers. CoDMW-2 also has a bunch of multi-player games for 6-16 Players - Free-For-All, Search & Destroy, Demolition, Domination, Team Deathmatch, and Capture The Flag. It's amazing how much gameplay fits into such a little box!!!
Graphics: 10/10
One of the greatest looking games of all time!!! From the levels, to the detailed character models, to the explosions, to the visual effects... This game looks fantastic!
Story: 3/10
The story is told through cutscenes and in game dialogue during the missions. The cutscenes look great and the voice acting is Hollywood Blockbuster Quality. However, when Infinity Ward was making this game, they made the levels first, and then tried to tie them all together... and it shows. Although the cutscenes are great, what happens throughout the game is ridiculous. It makes about as much sense as the latest GI JOE or Transformers 2 movies. Although, the story looks and sounds great, it will leave you scratching your head thinking, "I'm supposed to believe what?!?!"
Gameplay: 9/10
CoDMW-2 keeps the action intense by allowing the characters to die quickly. But the game also assists you with your aim. You use the right analog stick to look around and when you are close, you hit the Left Trigger to snap to the nearest enemy. This eliminates the frustration of trying to put a cursor on a moving target with an analog stick, and makes you feel like some kind of Delta Force Hero. All of the guns are fun to use and fun to shoot, and it feels great to wipe out a bunch of enemies. There are some vehicles in this game, but if you use one, you're either on a rail or driving on a fairly narrow track. This isn't Halo where you can jump into a Warthog and attack the map creatively. Nor is this Red Faction Guerilla where you can jump into a tank and level buildings. Instead, CoDMW-2 uses vehicles to break up the levels and inject a different kind of excitement into them. It's a good change of pace, but definitely feels like there is something missing.
Levels: 9/10
Most of the levels are fantastic and some are just plain good. Graphically they're all amazing and varied. From the streets of Brazil, to the caverns of Afghanistan, to the streets of the USA, to the snow covered mountains of Kazakhstan... this game delivers! The visuals are phenomenal and the action is top notch!
Multiplayer: 10/10
There are loads of maps for the multiplayer modes and a wide variety of mission objectives ranging from Free-For-All, to Team Deathmatch, to Capture the Flag... What sets multiplayer apart from the other shooters out there is its reward system otherwise known as PERKS. When you start playing Multiplayer, you're pretty weak. After a while, you can customize your own Character Classes. You can create 5 unique Classes and you can select the following. A Primary Weapon (sniper rifle, assault rifle, riot shield...), A secondary Weapon (sub-machine gun, pistol, shotgun...) Equipment (grenade, throwing knife, claymore), Secondary Grenades (flashbang, stun grenade...), and PERKS (fast reload, faster run speed, higher accuracy...) You unlock more gear and upgrades like a laser sight or a grenade launcher by collecting experience points. You can unlock Perks by earning Experience Points and completing Challenges. There is so much customization, you can create any type of character that you can imagine. Specialize in Stealth, Speed, Damage, Explosives... etc. You are also given additional rewards for killing 3,4,5... enemies in a row and the rewards are great! Locate enemies on the radar, place your own sentry gun, call in your own airstrike from a Predator Drone... If you're new at shooters, that's ok too! The game also gives you special abilities if you die a few times without killing any enemies. You can respawn with extra health, you can even "borrow" the powerful gear from the guy that killed you for a life. If you die a few times and eventually kill a guy, the game rewards you with extra experience for turning your death streak around, so even sub-par players can advance rapidly.
Sound: 10/10
The vehicles, gunfire, and explosions are Hollywood Blockbuster Quality!
Maturity: There's shooting, blood, intense violence, and foul language. (Because Marines don't say, "Awww Shucks" or "Oh Fudge!" so use parental discretion with kids.)
Overall: 9.5/10
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is not perfect, but it delivers hours and hours of pulse pounding action! The level of polish on the graphics and gameplay is outstanding! The game is fun and if you take advantage of the Multi-Player Modes, you can be entertained for over 100+ hours... easy.
Buy it if you want an intense military shooter and you have Xbox Live or a friend that can play the Coop Missions with you 'Split Screen Style.'
Rent it if you just want to finish the campaign. You can get through it in about 6 hours.
Avoid it if you don't like Intense Action, Military Battles, or Mature Games.
If you liked this game, you should try Halo 3, Gears of War 2, Red Faction Guerilla, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, or the Battlefield games.
Customer Review: Best Video game ever Summary: 5 StarsThe game was awesome, I had a little problem with shipping but it got solved immediately, A++++ Seller! Hope to do business with again.
Customer Review: A Modern Classic Summary: 5 StarsI was skeptical at first that Infinity Ward could produce a game that was better than Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This game met my expectations and then some. The campaign mode, although short (took me about 7 hours) is action packed. The new Special Ops mode is highly addicted and contains some fun and challenging missions. You can even play some of them with another person either offline or online. The true value of this game comes in the online mode. Infinity Ward has added new games modes (such as 3rd person mode) as well as a slew of new weapons. Although the new maps take some time to get used to, there is enough variety for just about anyone. If you own one game for the Xbox 360, this has to be it.
