Video Game Reviews of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Customer Review: It's over already!
Summary: 3 Stars

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

I guess I should first point out that I do not play online. I'll also point out that I'm not a diehard gamer and am 62 years old. Yes, some of us oldsters dabble about with gaming also! Given the fact that it seems to be an inherent nature of children having a knack, as it were, to working their collective way about with computers and playing video games with ease this only emphasizes my issues with MW2.
With that said, after all of the hype that I read on this game and it being voted as "Game of the Year" I was extremely disappointed! If you only plan on playing this game by yourself I would strongly suggest that you rent it. No worry about a late rental fee as you'll more than likely have it returned within only a few hours as that's about how long it takes to complete this game! As I pointed out, if I can complete this game in about three hours actual playing time (if that) I can well imagine that a teen/child will go through it in even less time! As to a child playing this game I'll comment on that later as they should definitely NOT!

It could very well be that the game designers were not all that concerned about the single player mode and were more focused about on line and co-op gaming. If that is the case they certainly achieved it as to totally ignoring the single player mode and leave you sitting there saying to yourself; "What...it's over already!" There are several contributing factors to the short game play aside from the overall shortness of the game script in itself. I'll try to make a comparison here if I may. I recently finished playing MOH Airborne and I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to playing it again and....again! It challenged you as to watching your health and ammo. Granted, it had check points when you achieved an objective but they were few and far in between and if by chance you were killed (which happens quite often) you had to start all over again. Such is not the case with MW2. Check points are more than abundant. If you get killed....no problem. You'll more than likely start out from where you left at. If you get seriously injured there is no need to worry about finding any health packs as none are needed. You just simply take cover and within seconds your health is fully restored. Did you run out of ammo? Hey, again no need to worry! The place is littered with other weapons and all you have to do is pick one up and continue! Now I ask you....just where is the challenge? There is a very simple answer to that as there is none! Ergo... the game is over before you realize it! I have absolutely no idea if there are cheat codes available for this game albeit I could never for the life of me understand why one would want to cheat on any game in the first place. If however there are cheat codes available for MW2 I really can't see any need for them whatsoever. Of course that is unless you wish to complete this game from start to finish during the half time break of a football game!

I will however give this game two thumbs up for its fantastic graphics, sound and depth of texture. I imagine I should have first played the first MW game as I had absolutely no idea why I was fighting and at times who I was fighting! Obviously a world war going on ( with the Russians?) The game simply started out by saying: "Five years later". OK...I'll give the game that, and as stated, I'm ignorant as to what the premise of this game is and I'll probably have to check out the first one so I can understand where this one picks up. I found myself playing more than one character (something I personally do not care for) and being shuffled about from one country to another to fight intense battles (but yet oh so easy) and never actually comprehending why I was there except for being given some objective shouted out at me constantly over and over and over again. Yeah...I heard you the first time now for the love of God, shut up already!

Now, a strong warning to parents here. I'm fully aware that this game has a rating of M (17+) and well deserved. I realize that children will however play games with such ratings and be that as it may, but there is one VERY disturbing sequence in this game which is TOTALLY uncalled for no matter what excuses the developers give for including it. There is one sequence where you are called upon to infiltrate an arms dealer. While being undercover you are brought to an airport and called upon to indiscriminately slaughter all of the passengers at the terminal with the other terrorists! One very disturbing scene was of a man crawling for safety while leaving a trail of blood! Luckily the designers left out any scenes of children at the airport. How very considerate of them! Granted, there is a warning that this sequence might possibly be disturbing to some (really!) and can be passed by without having any effect on the outcome of the game. If one is NOT disturbed by this sequence....???!!! I ask you then, why include it? Simply to satisfy the sick mind of the designers? Do you for one moment actually think that a child will read the warning and then decide to bypass this scenario? I think not.

Bottom line is that if you're mature enough MW2 lives up to its hype as for graphics but save your money if you plan to play this as a standalone and simply rent it if you can. It seems as though this game is strictly designed for those who wish to play co-op or online. In my opinion it leaves the person who wished only to play it alone will leave him wondering what happened to the length of the game and wanting his money back!

Description of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Acclaimed developer Infinity Ward brings you Modern Warfare 2, the sequel to the best-selling shooter of all-time, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series.

Story
The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs.

Gameplay
The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them.

Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches.

Special Ops Co-op Mode
Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality.
